I believe it's A) as well, because the /etc/passwd file only shows placeholders for the real password.

I'm going to have to go with C on this one. The shadow password file is supposed to hide the real password, so a single '--' makes the most sense.

Option B looks right to me. The shadow password file is where the encrypted passwords are stored, so that's what should be visible in the /etc/passwd file.
