Actual exam question for Confluent's Certified Developer for Apache Kafka exam
Question #: 59
Topic #: 2
[All Certified Developer for Apache Kafka Questions]

There are five brokers in a cluster, a topic with 10 partitions and replication factor of 3, and a quota of producer_bytes_rate of 1 MB/sec has been specified for the client. What is the maximum throughput allowed for the client?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: D

Each producer is allowed to produce @ 1MB/s to a broker. Max throughput 5 * 1MB, because we have 5 brokers.

Wait, wait, wait... is this one of those 'divide by the number of brokers' kind of questions? If so, then B) 0.33 MB/s is the way to go. Gotta love these Kafka brain-teasers!

I believe the correct answer is C) 1 MB/s, as the quota of producer_bytes_rate is what determines the maximum throughput allowed for the client.

D) 5 MB/s has to be the right answer. With 3 replicas, the client should be able to utilize the full 1 MB/sec quota across the 5 brokers, right? I'm feeling good about this one.

I agree. It's important to consider all the factors involved in determining the maximum throughput for the client.

That makes sense. The replication factor and number of brokers definitely play a role in determining the maximum throughput allowed for the client.

Hold up, are we sure this isn't a trick question? I mean, who sets a quota that low with 5 brokers and 10 partitions? Feels like there's more to this than meets the eye.

I agree, it does seem odd to set such a low quota with that setup.

I think the answer is B) 0.33 MB/s. With 5 brokers and a quota of 1 MB/sec, the maximum throughput would be divided by the number of brokers, so 1 MB/sec / 3 brokers = 0.33 MB/s.
