How much should be the heap size of a broker in a production setup on a machine with 256 GB of RAM, in PLAINTEXT mode?

In Kafka, a small heap size is needed, while the rest of the RAM goes automatically to the page cache (managed by the OS). The heap size goes slightly up if you need to enable SSL

512 MB? That's like trying to fit an elephant in a shoebox. Good luck with that!

I agree, 128 GB sounds like a more reasonable heap size for that setup.

But with 256 GB of RAM, wouldn't it be better to allocate more memory for better performance?

16 GB sounds more reasonable, though I'm not sure if it's enough to handle the broker's thirst for memory.

I disagree, I believe 16 GB is enough for a broker in PLAINTEXT mode.

128 GB? That's overkill, unless the broker is planning to store the entire internet in RAM.

I think it should be 128 GB because we need a large heap size for a production setup.
