CompTIA Exam N10-008 Topic 1 Question 54 Discussion

Actual exam question for CompTIA's N10-008 exam
Question #: 54
Topic #: 1
[All N10-008 Questions]

An engineer recently installed a new distribution switch and connected two servers provisioned with the following IPs: 192.168.17.20 and 192.168.17.30. The servers cannot connect to the Internet, but they can reach themselves. The engineer observes that the distribution switch has the following setup:

The engineer is able to reach the core router 192.168.17.1 from the distribution switch. Which of the following is the most likely cause of this issue?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: C

The servers can communicate with each other but not the internet, indicating local network connectivity is fine. The distribution switch's VLAN and IP configuration are correct, and the engineer can reach the core router, suggesting the issue is not with the switch or the router. The most likely cause is that the servers do not have a default gateway configured, which is necessary for traffic to leave the local network and reach the internet.

It's possible, but I think not having a default gateway is a more common issue in this scenario.

You know what they say, 'When in doubt, blame the subnet mask.' But seriously, this one seems pretty straightforward. The servers need to be set up with a default gateway to access the internet. Gotta love those basic networking concepts, am I right?

Yeah, without the default gateway, the servers won't know where to send traffic outside of their own network.

I agree, setting up the default gateway on the servers should solve the issue.

Nah, I don't think it's a Layer 1 issue. The core router is reachable, so the physical connection seems to be working fine. My money's on the servers not having the right gateway configured. Classic rookie mistake, if you ask me.

Makes sense. Gotta set up that default gateway for them to get online.

Definitely a gateway issue. They need that route out to the Internet.

Yeah, I think so too. They can talk to each other, but without a gateway, they're stuck.

I agree, it's probably the gateway. The servers need that to reach the Internet.

Yeah, that's a common oversight. The servers need the gateway to reach the internet.

I agree, not setting the default gateway on the servers could definitely cause this issue.

But could it also be that the subnet mask is incorrect?

I agree with Hannah, without a default gateway, the servers won't be able to reach the Internet.

I think the most likely cause is that the servers are not configured with a default gateway.

Ha! Routing loop? What is this, a 90s networking exam? C'mon, that's way too obvious. The subnet mask is definitely the culprit here. I bet the engineer is scratching their head, wondering how they missed that one.

Yeah, not setting the default gateway can really mess things up. The engineer should double check that.

The issue is most likely due to the servers not being configured with a default gateway. Without a gateway, they won't be able to reach the internet, but they can still communicate with each other on the local network.

We should configure the servers with the correct gateway to fix the issue.

That makes sense, without a gateway they can't reach the internet.

I think the servers are missing a default gateway.
