Amazon Exam SOA-C02 Topic 2 Question 87 Discussion

Actual exam question for Amazon's SOA-C02 exam
Question #: 87
Topic #: 2
[All SOA-C02 Questions]

A SysOps administrator needs to track the costs of data transfer between AWS Regions. The SysOps administrator must implement a solution to send alerts to an email distribution list when transfer costs reach 75% of a specific threshold.

What should the SysOps administrator do to meet these requirements?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: B

The reason is that it uses the Amazon CloudWatch billing alarm which is a built-in service specifically designed to monitor and alert on cost usage of your AWS account, which makes it a more suitable solution for this use case. The alarm can be configured to detect when costs reach 75% of the threshold and when it is triggered, it can publish a message to an Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) topic. The email distribution list can be subscribed to the topic, so that they will receive the alerts when costs reach 75% of the threshold.

AWS Budgets allows you to track and manage your costs, but it doesn't specifically focus on data transfer costs between regions, and it might not provide as much granularity as CloudWatch Alarms.

True, but it might be more complex to set up compared to the other options.

I believe setting up a VPC flow log with Lambda function would provide more detailed analysis.

But using AWS Budgets could also be a good solution for tracking costs.

I disagree, setting up a CloudWatch billing alarm seems more straightforward to me.

I think the best option is to create an AWS Cost and Usage Report and configure an alarm in Amazon SNS.

Haha, gotta love these AWS services with their alphabet soup of acronyms. SNS, VPC, Lambda - it's like they're trying to make our heads spin! I think I'm leaning towards option C as well. AWS Budgets just feels a bit more straightforward for this use case.

Hmm, I'm not sure. Option C with AWS Budgets also seems viable. That way we can directly set the threshold and alert percentage, without having to configure alarms and SNS topics. Though I suppose the CloudWatch option in B is a bit more flexible if we need to adjust the thresholds later on.

B: Create an Amazon CloudWatch billing alarm to detect when costs reach 75% of the threshold. Configure the alarm to publish a message to an Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) topic. Subscribe the email distribution list to the topic.

A: That sounds good. Analyzing the usage report in Amazon Athena can provide valuable insights.

C: Use AWS Budgets to create a cost budget for data transfer costs. Set an alert at 75% of the budgeted amount. Configure the budget to send a notification to the email distribution list when costs reach 75% of the threshold.

D: Set up a VPC flow log. Set up a subscription filter to an AWS Lambda function to analyze data transfer. Configure the Lambda function to send a notification to the email distribution list when costs reach 75% of the threshold.

I agree, option B does look like the simplest solution here. Creating a CloudWatch billing alarm and hooking it up to an SNS topic to send notifications is a clean approach. I'm not a big fan of having to analyze cost data in Athena, that seems overly complicated for this use case.

This is a tricky one. We need to track data transfer costs across AWS Regions and set up alerts when costs hit 75% of a specific threshold. I'm leaning towards option B - it seems the most straightforward way to set up a CloudWatch billing alarm and notify the email distribution list.
